      The cochineal (/ ˌ k ɒ tʃ ɪ ˈ n iː l / KOTCH-ih-NEEL, / ˈ k ɒ tʃ ɪ n iː l / KOTCH-ih-neel; Dactylopius coccus) is a scale insect in the suborder Sternorrhyncha, from which the natural dye carmine is derived. A primarily sessile parasite native to tropical and subtropical South America through North America (Mexico and the Southwest United States), this insect lives on cacti in the Class: Insecta. Maya, the Mesoamerican Indians occupying a nearly continuous territory in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and northern Belize. Before the Spanish conquest of Mexico and Central America, the Maya possessed one of the greatest civilizations of the Western Hemisphere. Learn more about the Maya here.
